My name is James Earl Jackson Holloway. I was supposedly born in Mingo County, West Virginia at the old Tug Valley Clinic. My father and mother resided in Pike County, Kentucky when I was born. I was raised in Pike County, Kentucky. I am proud of my heritage and grateful to those who came before me for their passing on of the genes. Thanks so much, people who came before!
I have a story here about my true place of birth... In 2007 I was trying to get a passport. Frankfort, Kentucky informed me there was no record of my birth in Kentucky. After a while I inquired at Charleston, West Virginia because Williamson, West Virginia was the closest hospital to us when I was born. In two weeks I received a letter, inside was a birth certificate, but it was peculiar. Right where it says West Virginia Department of Health and Vital Statistics the words had been marked through with a pencil, Kentucky had been written in pencil where West Virginia had been. Then Kentucky had been marked out with a pencil, and the delivering doctor had written on the side beside the marked out words: By Dr. George Easley. I was talking to my sister about this and she informed me I was born at home in Turkey Creek, Pike County, Kentucky and Dr. George Easley from Mingo County had made a house call to our home in Pike County to deliver me. North Carolina. These two words ring in my head. My father's voice is speaking as I listen. 'Son,' he is saying, 'our people came from the state of North Carolina to these mountains around 1866. My Grandpa's name was Martin Holloway. He was born and raised in Wilkes County, North Carolina. His Daddy was Andrew Jackson Holloway. Grandpa Martin served in the 61st North Carolina Infantry, Company I for two years during the Civil War. In 1866 Grandpa Martin married Nancy Rose Brown over in Tazewell County, Virginia. Your sister, Gretta Rose was called after her. Hardin Holloway was my Daddy. Most folks don't know it, and I reckon I ain't never told you, yet. . . my Daddy's first name was James, just the same as yours, son. Be proud of that name, son. . . and carry it well. You were named after a proud and fine man. son. . . .James Hardin Holloway. Daddy was born in Pike County, Kentucky in October in the year of our Lord 1869. Hardin was the second son of Martin and Nancy Rose, Andrew Jackson was their first born.
Sarah Charles was my Mama, son. She was the daughter of John Charles and Mary Elizabeth Keene. John and Polly, as they called her, were the parents of three children. Sarah, my Mama, William Perry, who married Caroline Goff, and Franklin Kerry, who married Mary Sullivan and raised a family over at Raccoon Creek. Sometimes, folks get to a confusing my Uncle Frank with Franklin Kelly Charles, the son of John Charles' uncle, Frederick Charles. Franklin Kelly married Etta Sullivan, the sister of Mary Sullivan that my Uncle Frank married. I aim to tell you some more about my people, son. . . .when I get the time, and your Mother says she has a story to tell you, ever you get around to asking her.'
Your Mama's mama's name was Pauline Dolly Mead afore she married your Grandpa Gilmore Justice. She was a little doll, 'bout 4 and a half feet tall. Old man Gilmore was a giant of a man. They was some fine people, son.
